Capezio is currently the largest pointe maker in the world. The shop was started in 1887 by an Italian cobbler by the name of Salvatore Capezio. It was located across the street from the Metropolitan Opera House. Five years later he was the official shoemaker for the Met and made character shoes for the opera
and ballet shoes for the corps de ballet.
In 1915 Anna Pavlowa endorsed Capezio's shoes. At the Paris Exposition in 1925, his dance slippers won the gold medal. Before his death in 1940 at the age of seventy, Salvatore Capezio saw his company fortified. His business had grown to most every major city and dance retailer in the world. Capezio bought the Selva company in the early 1970's when Selva was bankrupt. Most Selva design items were discontinued immediately, though a few lingered for a few more years.
